Comments on D.C. Yesterday- Schedule for Today and Tomorrow

 Dear All,

I would like to share with you some brief thoughts and a message from the Rabbinical Council of America -the rabbinic body to which I belong, and the voice of mainstream American Orthodoxy with a little  introduction

As you know, it is not my practice to comment on politics in the Synagogue space and from the pulpit. However as Jewish Americans we are not only required to pray for and actively work for the success and security of our nation and follow its laws.  However these comments are not about politics, but about fundamental civic decency and our obligations thereto.

My mother never forgot her first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty when she arrived as Holocaust survivor (a hidden child) and refugee aboard the SS Queen Mary.  We also must show our
"Hakarat Hatov" our appreciation to this nation which has not just taken us in  but give us every opportunity and freedom. That opportunity and freedom flow from its institutions.

Hence,Judaism demands that  we must speak up in the defense of, and uphold the integrity of those institutions no matter what our politics -and I know that our community holds a very diverse variety of political viewpoints -and this is the beauty of these United States.

Lets us debate with our mouths, pens, and keyboards but with eyes and ears open to what our fellow citizens are saying

The RCA comments follow:
"The Rabbinical Council of America, the largest membership organization of rabbis in North America, condemns the acts of unlawful trespass, vandalism, and violence perpetrated today at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C., and denounces the inflammatory speech that incites such violence.

The political traditions of the United States call for respect for the peaceful transition of power, a vital linchpin of our democracy. We call upon all the citizens of our country to unite during these challenging times and to reaffirm our commitment to civil discourse."
